Chances are, if you’ve logged into tumblr within the past week you’ve noticed that there’s an awful lot of Pokemon splicing going on. I was particularly fond of the cute Koffing splices so I made plushies of Chanfing and Raifing *u*

I don’t have room to keep these (they’re bigger than they look in the pictures!), but I’m not sure how much I’d want to sell them for. If you’re interested in adopting one/both shoot me an offer, I also have a trade wishlist~

About the Arrow series.

So, I just finished watching the Arrow season finale. You know, the show based on the Green Arrow comics. I’ve been keeping up with the show just because I was curious to see how it ended. I’ve definitely accumulated some gripes, from the “eh, I’ll let it pass,” to the “all right what the shit.” If you’re not up to date with the show, this does contain spoilers, so read to your own discretion. Also: Huuuuuge tl;dr ahead. You’ve been warned.

WOW SO THIS FUCKING SHOW. I first began watching it because I really love superhero shows, and I was hoping that it’d be another thing that got me to like a superhero I never put too much thought into (ie: Thor, for me at least. I loved the movie, never gave a shit about Thor beforehand). Now, my knowledge of Green Arrow is mostly based off the shows he’s in, mainly the animated ones like Justice League, Justice League: Unlimited, and Young Justice (I love how his character was done in YJ, especially when under the stress of his sidekicks dying/turning on him). Basically, my knowledge is superficial, and not too comic-book based. I have read a lot on Green Arrow since I began watching the show, but I think a Green Arrow lover would shame me for my small basis of Arrow knowledge.

Okay, enough of that. On to the damn review. The story is about Oliver Queen, Green Arrow’s secret identity, as a millionaire playboy who gets stranded on an island for 5 years. When he returns, 20% of his body is covered in scar tissue, and he’s pretty psychologically messed up. This follows the comic book canon (mostly). The difference is that he has parents in this, which is whatever to me. As he comes back to his city, he finds that it’s been overrun by crime, and seeks to help it out by sporting an arrow and green hood. This is pretty much the basis of the show.

By first gripe comes from the fact that I sort of hate how the CW (the channel it’s hosted on) does a lot of their shows. It’s a lot of hot burly males and swooning women. Supernatural followed this trend for a while, which is another CW show, but it broke this trend before long. This is pretty much ever male/female relationship in the show. Also, the show reflect A LOT of parallels with Batman Begins. Mainly: 1) Millionaire leaves for years, 2) While gone he undergoes training with a mentor to help him “save the city,” 3) Comes home to a lawyer ex-lover, 4) both have to save the city from a catastrophe that will destroy the poor part of the city. The parallels go on, and keep trying to make the jump to seemingly be like Batman. Also, both Oliver Queen and Bruce Wayne feign being rich playboys to avoid suspicion of being a hero by night. I might just be digging, but the connections bugged me a bit.

Back to that whole male/female relationship. Which the males in the show are given more dynamic roles (Oliver, Roy Harper, Malcolm Merlyn, ect), the females are given “eh” roles in comparison. First, Laurel Lance. for some people, the name “Lance” rings a bell, especially because her middle name is Dinah. Laurel Dinah Lance. She’s Black Canary. Which is why I hate her in this show. She starts off strong as this strong lawyer who helps people even though it nearly gets her killed (like Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins), but then slowly becomes a standard female character who tosses herself at the “men” of the show. Literally. Tossing. This pisses me off because Black Canary is NOTHING like this, and definitely doesn’t burst into tears whenever she talks to Oliver or Tommy (his best friend, also her ex-boyfriend. Ugh). She’s supposed to be strong, badass, and independent, and yeah, has wiggle-room for a struggle or two. Just not the whole “Oh no, I’m in love, what do I do,” problems, because she’s BLACK FUCKING CANARY.

Then to Oliver’s best friend, Tommy Merlyn, the son of Malcom Merlyn, who is, you guessed it, Merlyn from the comics (Green Arrow’s rival). Tommy is a playboy asshole too, who tries to get Ollie to go out and fuck women like all good friends do (I think). That I don’t really see too much of a problem with, because it’s okay for some characters to be assholes. Tommy then tries to be a more responsible adult after his dad cuts off his finances, and he tries to impress Laurel (who he is dating at this point). They break up because Tommy decides that she and Oliver deserve to be together, seeing that she still loves him. When Laurel confronts Oliver about this, they fuck. Seriously. They just immediately start going at it while Tommy watches them through a window while pouting (I died when this happened). He gets pissed at Oliver, tells him that he wishes he died on the island, and is just grumpy the rest of the finale until the last part. Pretty much, Tommy, plotwise, is there just to be there. The story didn’t really need him except for when Oliver saves his father, Malcolm, which he wouldn’t have done if it weren’t his best friends’s father. That said, even this part wasn’t needed, and shouldn’t have been added just to give Tommy a purpose.

Then Thea. Thea is Oliver’s younger sister (He doesn’t have a sister in the comics I don’t think, but hey, whatever, they’re losing all sorts of canon here anyways). She’s pretty much the family screw-up, next to Oliver before he left the island, who does all sorts of stupid shit up until the show eventually ends. One, she hits on Tommy, which fails, and decides to do drugs and crash her car. After a lawsuit and Oliver sucking up to Laurel, she gets off scott-free and has to work in the Laurel’s lawyer office as punishment. While there, she gets her purse robbed, and meets the robber, Roy god-damn Harper. They start butting heads and go to making out a lot. It sort of goes to show that Thea is in the show to be Roy’s love interest, because she doesn’t serve a purpose anywhere else other than to be Roy’s support (who often tells her to go away anyways). It’s around this point that I’m getting tired of females in this show not serving a purpose outside of “support” or “love interest.” The only exception to this clause is Felicity Smoak, his is sort of Oliver’s go-to tech buddy, who does all of the hacking for him. She’s cool, and actually does a lot of stuff, and, go figure, she’s nobody’s love interest.

Speaking of female characters, this brings me to a guest appearance Helena Bertinelli. For the less comic-saavy, this is Huntress. He appears twice, has a brief relationship with Ollie in the first appearance, and have a ridiculous fall-out. They fight crime together for a brief period, go to dinner, and holy shit: Tommy and Laurel are at that same diner! How fucking wacky is that shit, am I right?! So Oliver and Helena meet them there, while Oliver goes into full “fuck that” mode, and tries to not eat with them to avoid an awkward situation, Helena is then like “nope, sounds like a great idea,” and that happens. Helena then gets pissed that Oliver is acting weird and slightly starry-eyed towards Laurel, and leaves angrily. Along with that, she also vows revenge against Oliver. If I’m the only thinking “holy shit” at this point, I’m severely surprised, because she just vowed revenge against someone she’s fallen in love with because he batted his eyes weird at dinner to a girl he used to sleep with who is now sleeping with his best friend.

While I’m at it, does any of what I’m saying sound like Green Arrow to you? With things like love interests, dinners, flaunting women, best friends and girlfriends, it all sounds like a CW drama and not an actual superhero story. This is what seriously killed the show for me, because it was not at all the super hero sort of thing I was looking for. Way too much love drama for my taste, and not enough of that super hero, personal drama that comic books have made me love. This show had a lot of problems in this department. Primarily in this department actually.

Now the end of the show. In the season finale, Malcolm Merlyn and Oliver’s mother (yep, his mom’s in on the grand fuck-all plan too) initiate the Undertaking, which is a plan to use a machine to trigger an artificial earthquake that will level The Glades, which is the poor district of the city. The reason for this is because Malcolm thinks that the city can’t be saved. This seems like a reason, only the real reason is that Malcolm’s wife was murdered in the Glades, and died on the street while nobody helped her. Despite all of the things I’ve said about the mega-romance in the show, I actually liked this motivation. Felicity helps Laurel’s father, the police chief, diffuse the earthquake device while Oliver and his partner, Diggle (originally a bodyguard for Oliver before they eventually started fighting crime together) go to fight Malcolm Merlyn, who, as previously stated, is a rival archer. They fight, and Malcolm is about to win when he puts Oliver in a headlock. Oliver wins the fight by stabbing himself with an arrow, thus stabbing Malcom. This seems like they’d both be near death, but nope, Oliver practically skips away to save the Glades. But, while Felicity and the police chief disarm one device, there’s two. So, the other one destroys the Glades, Malcolm dies trying to save Laurel, and dies in Ollie’s arms, Roy saves some people, and everything goes to shit while the season ends.

Now, I love sad endings. I love when everything hits the fan all at once, because I find those endings interesting (I’m looking at you Grant Morrison. Thanks for killing Damian Wayne mother fucker). I am a lover of having my heart ripped out by fictional stories. But, in this case, it seemed a little out of place. The main reason why is because this entire plot has been riddled with romance and tedious drama, and THEN it decides to have an ending like this. I feel like the story should have been like this from the start, not to say certain parts weren’t sad. The plot just seemed way too immature for the ending.

Overall, I watched Arrow for the same reason that otters eat watermelon. Otters hate the taste of watermelon, but they can’t bring themselves to stop eating it. I really couldn’t not see how the show ends at least. Pretty much the reason I kept reading Maximum Ride after book three, and why I read Naruto. You just want to see how this shit ends, if it will ever end. That said, the show was a bit disappointing, and I can’t see it getting really amazing ratings. I know DC released an Arrow style Green Arrow comic series, that may not do so well either I imagine. But, I really don’t know. I’ve never met die-hard Green Arrow fans, and I’m mostly living in the realms and knowledge of Spider-Man, X-Men, Deadpool, Iron Man, Batman, and Red Hood and the Outlaws. So, my own knowledge of Green Arrow and its following is very limited. All of that aside, the show left me really disappointed, because I wanted this show to do what it did for me what Thor did for me, and Captain America. Both are superheroes I could not give a shit about, but I grew to love them, research them, and really take a liking them and buying their products. That’s the thing, if this show would have been more superhero focused, and not so caught up in stupid typical love-drama that the CW seems to love, then this show could have been a hit, ESPECIALLY with the new rise in comic book-based media. I can see it fading fast, thought I’m not sure if it’s been picked up for another season. I kind of hope not.

Overall, about a 6/10. Not completely terrible, just severely disappointing.
